Booking Through Thursday: Whoops!
A meme from Booking Through Thursday.
Today’s topic is cheating! I have been slacking off so we are going to cram like it is the end of semester exams because even though I’m behind I don’t really want to ignore these topics but I don’t want to do a separate one for each at this point.
December 20th, 2012 Present Tense “Any books you’re particularly hoping to be gifted this year? Any that you’re giving as presents this holiday season?”
I wrote a 10 book wish list for my blog here. These are the books I received:
- Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore – from the list
- The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides – not from the list but have heard much about it and I need variety
- The Drowned Vault by N. D. Wilson – from the list
- Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor – from the list
- The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There by Catherynne Valente – from the longer list and I’m pretty sure the gifter wants to read it when I am done
- A Wizard of Mars by Diane Duane – from the longer list and I already loaned it to the gifter
- Young House Love by Sherry & John Petersik – from the list
Most of these are from my mom and she did good because she stuck to the series that I already love versus the books that I have just been eye balling which I should go to the library and get! I am disturbed to realize that I did not gift a single book this year! Wait… I did give mom a pattern book but still!
December 27th, 2012 Favorites 2012 “A deceptively easy question for this week (easy to ask but possibly hard to answer): What are/were your favorite book(s) of the year? (Bonus points if you know how many books you read.)”
I tried to make a top 10 list here. I am sure if I tried to do it from scratch it could be completely different. I read 43 books but I wish that I had read more. Hopefully questions like this will be even more challenging in 2013.
January 3, 2013 Resolved “Any reading resolutions for the new year? Reading more? (Reading less?) Reading better books? Bigger books? More series? More relaxing books? And hey, feel free to talk about any other resolutions you might have, too … or why you choose NOT to have any.”
So I tend to avoid resolutions because I think that they are too easy to break early on and then you are disappointed in yourself. Sure I would love to post every weekday, but as soon as I slipped I would feel like a failure. I prefer general goals and I try not to judge myself if I don’t make them. I’ve already made some lists so I won’t repeat:
And finally…
TODAY January 10th, 2013 Gifts “It’s my Dad’s birthday today, which makes me wonder … do you like to give books as gifts? I’m usually torn. I love giving and sharing books, but it can be hard. The giftee can be difficult to please, or you don’t know what they’ve read (or what they thought of books they have read). Even people who love to read and love to get books can be hard to gift books to … so, does that make you pause and reach for the neckties or DVDs or sweaters … anything BUT a book at gift-giving time? How do you feel about getting books yourself? Are you picky or easy? (For the record, I’m told I’m VERY hard to buy for, even though I’ll read just about anything … go figure.”
Part of me almost wants to just say ditto! I love giving books but it is way easier for some people than for others. My dad I like to give books because his interests are broad but he doesn’t read a lot so you don’t have to worry too much that he has already read it. My niece I also like to give books but she is the opposite almost, her interests are very similar to mine but she is a voracious reader. I gave her a whole box of books in 2011 and I think she just tore through them. She uses my personal library more than I do. (I had all of Duane’s wizard series but the last and she tore through them recently so Mom thought the last book was the perfect idea off my list for her. I opened it and immediately sent it to her!) I can buy books for Ben well but you can’t buy in advance because he might buy it for himself. I think I am very particular about giving books because its something that I can’t give to the necktie people. It is something really for those who you want to find the perfect gift for already. As far as myself I think I am easy for someone who reads as much as I do. I try to keep track of what I own and what I read. I have very broad tastes. Though I will admit books have been pushed to the bottom before just because I wasn’t as excited about them.
