Sunshine by Robin McKinley

Robin McKinley is one of my favorite authors because of The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword so I had been wanting to read this one for a while even though it is quite a different story and I was not disappointed. McKinley has this special skill for making characters you can really believe in and Sunshine and her friends are no different. She flawlessly combines the world we know with this other world torn apart by magic. The story was not what I expected as the blurb about Sunshine’s imprisonment with Con is the main thing you will find in summaries and such but this was actually perfect because it simply whetted my appetite for the further adventures of the baker and the vampire. The few adult moments simply make the characters more real and easy to relate to. As Rae, nicknamed Sunshine and Con fight for their lives together this magical world greatly resembles ours. One thing I found interesting was it felt to me as if this could have been the beginning of a series though it is in fact a stand alone, but I kind of like the possibilities left open for the future without all the loose strings having to be tied into pretty little bows. Overall a wonderfully fun book, obviously I enjoyed it I finished it in less than 24 hours (It would have been 12 had I not finally made myself go to bed at 4 in the morning.)
