My love of Tamora Pierce’s writing cannot be reiterated enough. As I was reading this book I realized I really ought to keep my eye out for a new copy of them someday as painful as it is because they are slowly starting to come apart. These books are wonderful for that tomboy in your life who hates feeling like she has to do “girl” things. The premise is this: Alanna wants to be a knight, her brother wants to be a sorcerer but she is to be a lady and he is to be a knight. So they decide to trade places the day their father sends them away. Their father who is terribly neglectful of them never even catches on. She struggles to fit in and keep up. One of my favorite things is that though she is a natural at most of the physical things she has to work extra hard with the sword and you definitely see her strengths and weaknesses in the academic realm. She makes some tough decisions, some of them life or death. I find myself cheering on Alanna again and again! I’m trying to pay attention for good quotes on this read, things like on page 209, “I want to be a warrior maiden and do great deeds.”
