Booking Through Thursday: Mood Reading
A meme from Booking Through Thursday.
Today’s topic is “Does your current mood affect your reading? Affect your choices? I know there are plenty of books I enjoy, but only if I’m in a particular kind of mood–or books that can lift me out of a bad mood without fail. Surely I’m not alone?”
Yes, yes, yes, yes. Oh and yes. My mood very much affects my reading. I think there are probably books in my past that in a different mood apathy would have been replaced by adoration. I think over the years I have gotten better about tailoring my choices to my mood but I think with new books there is still a danger that if it is not what you expect, even if you would normally like it, the mood can kill it. There are also books I loved that in the wrong mood I might not have enjoyed as much. I am most aware of the books that can lift me out of a bad mood, in particular any of Tamora Pierce‘s novels of Tortall. Especially the first three quartets which I have been known to devour an entire set in a sitting just to make myself feel better. I think many of the moods that affect my reading are actually based around my desire to forget reality.
