Booking Through Thursday: Influence

Booking Through Thursday

A meme from Booking Through Thursday.

Today’s topic is “Do other people influence what you choose to read? When a family member recommends something, or a friend says they hated a book you were planning to read … does it affect your reading choices?”

Yes and no and kind of?  Recommendations don’t affect me as much as they used to because I own so many darn books that often I am still trying to catch up with what was recommended to me a decade ago. I still love getting recommendations I’ve just become a bit of a procrastinator.  Most of my recommendations now come from other book bloggers.  I have figured out who really has similar taste.  I don’t think that I have ever had a book I was excited about that I gave up on because someone else hated it.  I have decided not to worry about books that I was already iffy on.  I do take it into account.  Say for example a blogger I loves says that whatever book was absolutely frustrating because the supposed heroine is simpering and constantly being rescued… if she drives me nuts a certain amount into the book I’ll step back and think that she is going to keep doing this and I might stop reading.  Now an opposite example say a blogger I follow talks about how some book was absolutely disgusting and there was sex and language and people doing bad things.  That is going to have no affect, if anything it might move the book up on my list.  I think any review and any recommendation should be taken with a good heaping of salt, because the world is filled with a vast variety of people.
